From picture to pastry.
Life is a journey full of unexpected turns. That’s partly why you’ll find a wall of cameras, in a Danish bakery, in south Wales. On the one hand, it doesn’t seem to make much sense. In truth, it’s the story of how the Bakery came to be.
Growing up in her native Denmark, Brød’s founder, Betina, was surrounded by photography. Whatever the occasion, her father would always have a camera to hand. Quite often, more than one. This passion for photography clearly rubbed off on Betina, and she caught the shutterbug at an early age. She longed for a career as photographer. But she got a job as a holiday rep. Like we said, unexpected.
During her time looking after holidaying Danes in Cyprus, she came across an opportunity to become a portrait photographer in south Wales. She’d never heard of Wales before, but being the determined young woman she was, she jumped on a plane and landed the job.
That led to her kicking off a photography career in south Wales, first taking portraits of children in Mothercare stores, later as a press photographer on the South Wales Argus, and then a decade as a freelance photographer. And during that decade, an idea for a whole new career started taking shape. To open a Danish bakery.
It was probably a combination of factors - keeping that connection with her homeland, missing real Danish bread and pastries, but most of all, the chance to try something completely new. That same passion Betina had for photography, has now extended to baking. And it’s one shared by a growing team of talented bakers who create all our freshly made products in our bakery in Pontcanna, Cardiff.
But that passion for photography also remains. The collection of old cameras on display in Penarth is a tribute to her father. It also goes to show that life doesn’t always go the way you expect. But it’s those twists and turns that make it exciting. And being ready to embrace them, is what creates space for new adventures. Enjoy the journey. And smile for the camera.
